More Vegetable Gardens

The New York Times reports that because the U.S. population is so much heavier than it was 50 years ago, the Coast Guard is assuming 25 pounds more per person on average and revising the carrying capacity of boats downward.

  1. I saw a story synopsis on how saddles are being made in larger sizes, and riders need larger horses, too. I confess to being 40 pounds heavier than in my 20’s, and I am a fairly normal size person for these parts.

  2. It is not so much complaining about the box stores but the vendors like Scotts, proven Winners and others who have whored themselves to the boxes and then come crawling back to us for salvation.

  3. The answer isn’t more veggie gardens, though. I grow my own food & am still significantly overweight. It’s training people to reach for the zucchini sticks instead of fries, or the fresh apple/fig/watermelon instead of the candy or cookie. I’m convinced that a lot of folks don’t veggie garden mostly because they’ve grown up on fat- & sugar-laden processed garbage & don’t know what real food tastes like. And the video screen in front of them is more immediately rewarding to their brains than waiting 2-3 months for results in a patch of dirt. Me ? Well, my issues are far-ranging in regard to weight & food, but as I re-train my brain for healthier eating preferences, the pounds are coming off.
