D.C. School Garden Week Photo Contest: The Winners

Results are in from the first D.C. School Garden Week photo contest and we are happy to announce the winners here. More than 100 photos were submitted from nine different schools. Winners were chosen by a panel of four distinguished judges:

Christa Carignan, Washington-area photographer, gardener and author of the Calendula & Concrete blog.

Mei Mei Chang, photographer and artist/teacher at Children's Studio School.

Susan Harris, professional garden coach, co-author of the Garden Rant blog, and co-founder of D.C. Urban Gardeners.

Kathy Jentz, publisher of Washington Gardener magazine.

Grades K -2:

Grades 3 - 5

First prize: "Bob," by Hannah Pozen, 5th grade, Horace Mann Elementary School

Second prize: "Park," by Anna Reuss,  5th grade, Horace Mann Elementary School

Third prize: "Sunny Day," by Jaren Burford, 4th grade, Children's Studio School

First runner-up: Untitled, by Tikeyah Peyton, 5th grade, Rudolph Elementary School

Second runner-up: "In the Middle of Nowhere," by Emma Vicini, 5th grade, Horace Mann Elementary School

Grades 6 - 8

First prize: "A Busy Bee at Work," by Rebecca Range, 6th grade, Horace Mann Elementary School

Second prize: "Growing Watermelons in the Garden," by Ana Ramirez, 6th grade, Horace Mann Elementary School

Third prize: "Friends Come in All Colors," by Hayden Lipczenko, 6th grade, Harbour School

Grades 9 - 12

First prize: "Purple Flowers on Belt Street, " by Nell Koring, 11th grade, Wilson Senior High School

Second prize: "Life's Garden Path," by LaToya Dent, 10th grade, Cardozo Senior High School

Third prize: "Looking for Honey," by Monica Rivera, 11th grade, Cardozo Senior High School

First runner-up: "Flower Walk," by Nell Koring, 11th grade, Wilson Senior High School

Second runner-up: "White Widow," by DeAngelo Spann, 12th grade, Cardozo Senior High School

Awesome! I just finished my 8th year teaching and have found that plants are a really good teaching tool!

Congrats to all the winners! It was fun helping judge. I cannot believe my favorite -- "Lineas Verdes/Green Lines," by Zoe Y. Valladares -- is by a kindergartner. I'd buy a print of that!
